RESUMO

Due to the harsh operating environment and ultralong operating hours of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), node failures are inevitable. Ensuring the reliability of the data collected by the WSN necessitates the utmost importance of diagnosing faults in nodes within the WSN. Typically, the initial step in the fault diagnosis of WSN nodes involves extracting numerical features from neighboring nodes. A solitary data feature is often assigned a high weight, resulting in the failure to effectively distinguish between all types of faults. Therefore, this study introduces an enhanced variant of the traditional belief rule base (BRB), called the belief rule base with adaptive attribute weights (BRB-AAW). First, the data features are extracted as input attributes for the model. Second, a fault diagnosis model for WSN nodes, incorporating BRB-AAW, is established by integrating parameters initialized by expert knowledge with the extracted data features. Third, to optimize the model's initial parameters, the projection covariance matrix adaptive evolution strategy (P-CMA-ES) algorithm is employed. Finally, a comprehensive case study is designed to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method. The results of the case study indicate that compared with the traditional BRB method, the accuracy of the proposed model in WSN node fault diagnosis is significantly improved.

Myopia is a health issue that has attracted global attention due to its high prevalence and vision-threatening complications. It is well known that the onset and progression of myopia are related to both genetic and environmental factors: more than 450 common genetic loci have been found to be associated with myopia, while near work and outdoor time are the main environmental risk factors. As for many complex traits, gene-environment interactions are implicated in myopia development. To date, several genetic loci have been found to interact with near work or educational level. Gene-environment interaction research on myopia could yield models that provide more accurate risk predictions, thus improving targeted treatments and preventive strategies. Additionally, such investigations might have the potential to reveal novel genetic information. In this review, we summarised the findings in this field and proposed some topics for future investigations.

Background: Children and adolescents' myopia is a major public problem. Although the clinical effect of various interventions has been extensively studied, there is a lack of national-level and integral assessments to simultaneously quantify the economics and effectiveness of comprehensive myopia prevention and control programs. We aimed to compare the cost-effectiveness between traditional myopia prevention and control strategy, digital comprehensive myopia prevention and control strategy and school-based myopia screening program in China. Methods: A Markov model was used to compare the cost-utility and cost-effectiveness among school-based myopia screening, traditional myopia prevention and control strategy, and digital comprehensive myopia prevention and control strategy among 6 to 18-year-old rural and urban schoolchildren. Parameters were collected from published sources. The primary outcomes were quality-adjusted life-year, disability-adjusted life-year, incremental cost-utility ratio, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratio. Extensive sensitivity analyses were performed to test the robustness and sensitivity of base-case analysis. Findings: Compared with school-based myopia screening strategy, after implementing digital comprehensive myopia prevention and control strategy, the prevalence of myopia among 18-year-old students in rural and urban areas was reduced by 3.79% and 3.48%, respectively. The incremental cost-utility ratio per quality-adjusted life-year gained with the digital myopia management plan ($11,301 for rural setting, and $10,707 for urban setting) was less than 3 times the per capita gross domestic product in rural settings ($30,501) and less than 1 time the per capita gross domestic product in urban settings ($13,856). In cost-effectiveness analysis, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio produced by digital comprehensive myopia management strategy ($37,446 and $41,814 per disability-adjusted life-year averted in rural and urban settings) slightly exceeded the cost-effectiveness threshold. When assuming perfect compliance, full coverage of outdoor activities and spectacles satisfied the cost-effectiveness threshold, and full coverage of outdoor activities produced the lowest cost ($321 for rural settings and $808 for urban settings). Interpretations: Health economic evidence confirmed the cost-effectiveness of promoting digital comprehensive myopia prevention and control strategies for schoolchildren at the national level. Sufficient evidence provides an economic and public health reference for further action by governments, policy-makers and other myopia-endemic countries. Natural gas plays an important role in daily life and the petrochemical industry, but there are often large amounts of impurities which prevent the full use of methane in natural gas. Developing excellent adsorbents to purify CH4 from multi-component mixtures is crucial, but also faces great challenges. Here, by utilizing a ligand conformation preorganization strategy, we employ a flexible nonplanar hexacarboxylate ligand with C2 symmetry to successfully construct a robust microporous metal-organic framework {[Cu3(bmipia)(H2O)3]·(DMF)(CH3CN)2}n (GNU-1, bmipia = 5-[N,N-bis(5-methylisophthalic acid)amion] isophthalate) with an unprecedented topology. More importantly, the obtained GNU-1 not only exhibits good stability in acid-base and water environments, but also shows potential utility as an adsorbent for efficient separation and purification of natural gas under ambient conditions. The adsorption isotherms of GNU-1a (activated GNU-1) exhibit strong binding affinities for C2H6 and C3H8, a remarkable uptakes of C3H8 (6.64 mmol g-1) and C2H6 (4.6 mmol g-1) and an excellent selectivity of 330.1 and 17.5 for C3H8/CH4 and C2H6/CH4 mixtures, respectively, at 298 K and 1 bar. The breakthrough experiments demonstrate that the ternary CH4/C2H6/C3H8 mixtures are completely separated using a fixed-bed separator packed with GNU-1a at ambient temperature and also show great potential for recovering the C2H6 and C3H8 contents from natural gas. Finally, Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations are adopted to ascertain potential gas adsorption mechanisms. This work proves the feasibility of optimizing the structure and pore size of MOF materials by regulating the conformation of ligands for application in the field of light hydrocarbon adsorption/separation.

PURPOSE: This research aimed to determine the effects of near work on macular choroidal blood flow and thickness in young adults. METHODS: A total of 109 participants (19-28 years old) were recruited from Capital Medical University in China. The participants spent 40 min reading a book text at a distance of 33 cm. Swept-source optical coherence tomography/optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCT/OCTA) was performed to measure the changes in choriocapillaris perfusion area (CCPA) and choroidal thickness (ChT) after 40 min of near work. The SS-OCT/OCTA data covered an area of 6 mm × 6 mm, which centered on the fovea. RESULTS: The baseline ChT and CCPA before near work were negatively correlated with AL, while positively correlated with the magnitude of spherical equivalent (p < .001). Total CCPA decreased significantly by 6 mm × 6 mm macular area after near work compared to that before near work (24.26 ± 1.96 vs. 24.63 ± 1.61 mm2, p<.001). The macular ChT was lower after 40 min of reading than that before 40 min of reading, but no significant difference was observed (302.25 ± 77.69 vs. 304.92 ± 79.73 µm, p = .078). The extent of choroidal thinning was significantly positively correlated with the magnitude of CCPA reduction (p < .001). The decline in CCPA after near work was significantly positively correlated with axial length (AL; p < .001). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that near work significantly decreased CCPA. The extent of CCPA reduction after near work was associated with higher severity of myopia and choroidal thinning. The baseline CCPA and ChT decreased gradually with AL.

The electronic stopping power of palladium (Pd) for protons is investigated based on time-dependent density functional theory combined with Ehrenfest molecular dynamics simulations. The electronic stopping power of Pd with explicitly considering inner electrons for protons is calculated and the excitation mechanism for the inner electrons of Pd is revealed. The velocity proportionality of the low-energy stopping power of Pd is reproduced. Our study verified that the inner electron excitation contributes significantly to the electronic stopping power of Pd in the high energy range, which is strongly dependent on the impact parameter. The electronic stopping power obtained from the off-channeling geometry is in quantitative agreement with the experimental data in a wide velocity range, and the discrepancy around the stopping maximum is further reduced by considering the relativistic correction on the binding energy of inner electrons. The velocity dependence of the mean steady-state charge of protons is quantified, and the results showed that the participation of 4p-electrons reduces the mean steady-state charge of protons, and consequently decreases the electronic stopping power of Pd in the low energy range.

INTRODUCTION: This study sought to determine whether the application of 0.01% atropine eye drops could impact the disparity in refraction and axial length (AL) between the right and left eyes in Chinese children. METHODS: The study was designed as a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial. A total of 220 children aged 6-12 years were recruited from the Beijing Tongren Hospital in Beijing, China. Participants were randomized in a 1:1 ratio and were prescribed 0.01% atropine or placebo eye drops to be administered once a night to both eyes for the duration of 1 year. The cycloplegic refraction and AL were recorded including baseline, 6 months, and again at the 12 months. RESULTS: After 1-year follow-up period, 76 (69%) and 83 (75%) subjects of the initial 220 participants were identified as the 0.01% atropine and placebo groups, respectively. The inter-ocular difference in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and AL demonstrated stable values in the 0.01% atropine treatment group (SER: p = 0.590; AL: p = 0.322) analyzed after 1 year, but found a significant increase (SER: p < 0.001; AL: p = 0.001) in the placebo group. Furthermore, over 1 year, eyes with greater myopia in the atropine group exhibited slower myopia progression (0.45 ± 0.44 D) than the lesser myopic eye (0.56 ± 0.44 D) (p = 0.003). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that 0.01% atropine could maintain the inter-ocular SER and AL difference. And 0.01% atropine appeared to be more effective in delaying the progression of myopia in eyes with more myopia than in the less myopic eyes.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate myopia progression and axial elongation after stopping 0.01% atropine eye drops through a 2-year cross-over study. METHODS: This study was a randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled, cross-over trial in mainland China. 220 children aged 6-12 years with spherical equivalent range of -1.00 D to -6.00 D in both eyes were enrolled in Phase 1 for 1 year. Children who had completed the first year's follow-up continued in the second phase. In Phase 2, the placebo group was crossed over to the 0.01% atropine group (referred to as the 'placebo-atropine group'), and the 0.01% atropine group was crossed over to the placebo group (referred to as the 'atropine-placebo group'). All children underwent the examination of cycloplegic refraction and axial length at a 6-month interval. Only data from right eyes were included in analysis. RESULTS: One hundred thirty-three subjects completed 2 years of follow-up. In the first year, the mean myopia progression in atropine-placebo group was 0.21 ± 0.08 D slower than that in placebo-atropine group. After cross-over treatment, the mean myopia progression in atropine-placebo group was 0.22 ± 0.07D faster than that in placebo-atropine group in the second year. Over 2 years, the mean myopia progression was -1.26 ± 0.66D and -1.25 ± 0.70D in the atropine-placebo and placebo-atropine groups (p = 0.954). CONCLUSIONS: The difference in myopia progression between atropine-placebo group and placebo-atropine group in Phase 1 was similar to Phase 2 during the cross-over treatment. Through our cross-over trial, the results suggest that there is no rebound effect after using 0.01% atropine eye drops to prevent progression of myopia.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of low-dose atropine eyedrops on pupil metrics. METHODS: This study was based on a randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled, and cross-over trial in mainland China. In phase 1, subjects received 0.01% atropine or placebo once nightly. After 1 year, the atropine group switched to placebo (atropine-placebo group), and the placebo group switched to atropine (placebo-atropine group). Ocular parameters were measured at the crossover time point (at the 12th month) and the 18th month. RESULTS: Of 105 subjects who completed the study, 48 and 57 children were allocated into the atropine-placebo and placebo-atropine groups, respectively. After cessation, the photopic pupil diameter (PD) and mesopic PD both decreased (- 0.46 ± 0.47 mm, P < 0.001; - 0.30 ± 0.74 mm, P = 0.008), and the constriction ratio (CR, %) increased (4.39 ± 7.54, P < 0.001) compared with values at the crossover time point of the atropine-placebo group; pupil metrics of the atropine-placebo group had no difference from the values at the crossover time point of the placebo-atropine group. After 6 months of treatment, the photopic PD and the mesopic PD increased (0.54 ± 0.67 mm, P < 0.001; 0.53 ± 0.89 mm, P < 0.001), the CR (%) decreased (- 2.53 ± 8.64, P < 0.001) compared with values at the crossover time point of the placebo-atropine group. There was no significant relationship between pupil metrics and myopia progression during 0.01% atropine treatment. CONCLUSION: Pupil metrics and the CR could return to pre-atropine levels after cessation. Pupil metrics had no significant effect on myopia progression during treatment.

Clinical relevance: Identification of individuals with a higher risk of developing refractive error under specific gene and environmental backgrounds, especially myopia, could enable more personalized myopic control advice for patients. Background: Refractive error is a common disease that affects visual quality and ocular health worldwide. Its mechanisms have not been elaborated, although both genes and the environment are known to contribute to the process. Interactions between genes and the environment have been shown to exert effects on the onset of refractive error, especially myopia. Axial length elongation is the main characteristic of myopia development and could indicate the severity of myopia. Thus, the purpose of the study was to investigate the interaction between environmental factors and genetic markers of VIPR2 and their impact on spherical equivalence and axial length in a population of Han Chinese children. Methods: A total of 1825 children aged 13~15 years in the Anyang Childhood Eye Study (ACES) were measured for cycloplegic autorefraction, axial length, and height. Saliva DNA was extracted for genotyping three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the candidate gene (VIPR2). The median outdoor time (2 h/day) was used to categorize children into high and low exposure groups, respectively. Genetic quality control and linear and logistic regressions were performed. Generalized multifactor dimensional reduction (GMDR) was used to investigate gene-environment interactions. Results: There were 1391 children who passed genetic quality control. Rs2071623 of VIPR2 was associated with axial length (T allele, ß=-0.11 se=0.04 p=0.006), while SNP nominally interacted with outdoor time (T allele, ß=-0.17 se=0.08 p=0.029). Rs2071623 in children with high outdoor exposure had a significant interaction effect on axial length (p=0.0007, ß=-0.19 se=0.056) compared to children with low outdoor exposure. GMDR further suggested the existence of an interaction effect between outdoor time and rs2071623. Conclusions: Rs2071623 within VIPR2 could interact with outdoor time in Han Chinese children. More outdoor exposure could enhance the protective effect of the T allele on axial elongation.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to report the distribution of mean ocular perfusion pressure (MOPP) and its associated factors in Chinese children. Methods: We enrolled 3048 grade 1 students and 2258 grade 7 students of the Anyang Childhood Eye Study in central China. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) were recorded with a digital automatic sphygmomanometer. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was assessed by a non-contact tonometer. MOPP was calculated as 2/3 × (DBP + 1/3[SBP - DBP]) - IOP. Risk factors for myopia were obtained through a questionnaire survey. Results: The MOPP was 33.83 ± 6.37 mm Hg (mean ± SD) in grade 1, which was lower than 36.99 ± 6.80 mm Hg in grade 7 (P < 0.001). Compared with myopic eyes, non-myopic eyes had higher MOPP in grade 7 (37.72 ± 6.72 mm Hg versus 36.58 ± 6.57 mm Hg, P < 0.001) and in grade 1 (33.88 ± 6.29 mm Hg versus 33.12 ± 7.03 mm Hg, P = 0.12). Multivariable analysis showed that higher MOPP was associated with less myopia (P < 0.001), higher body mass index (BMI; P < 0.001), thinner central corneal thickness (P < 0.001), less time on near work (P < 0.001), and more time on sleeping (P = 0.04). Conclusions: MOPP was higher in children of older age, with higher BMI, less time on near work, and more time on sleeping, and was higher in eyes with less myopia. Translational Relevance: We found that MOPP might be an indicator for the detection of myopia development.

AIM: To assess the effect of 0.01% atropine eye drops on intraocular pressure (IOP) in myopic children. METHODS: A placebo-controlled, double-masked, randomized study. Totally 220 children aged 6 to 12y with myopia ranging from -1.00 to -6.00 D in both eyes were enrolled. Children were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to either 0.01% atropine eye drops or a placebo group using generated random numbers. All participants underwent the examination of IOP and cycloplegic refraction at baseline, 6 and 12mo. The change of IOP and the proportion of subjects with increased IOP in atropine and placebo groups were compared. RESULTS: Of 220 children, 117 were boys (53.2%). A total of 159 (72.3%) participants completed the follow-up at the 1-year study. At baseline, the mean IOP was 15.74 mm Hg (95%CI, 15.13 to 16.34 mm Hg) for the 0.01% atropine group and 15.59 mm Hg (95%CI, 15.00 to 16.19 mm Hg) for placebo group (mean difference, 0.14 mm Hg; P=0.743) after adjusting for central corneal thickness at baseline. At one year follow-up, the mean change of IOP was 0.16 mm Hg (95%CI, -0.43 to 0.76 mm Hg) for the 0.01% atropine group and -0.11 mm Hg (95%CI, -0.71 to 0.50 mm Hg) for placebo group (mean difference, 0.27 mm Hg; P=0.525) after adjusting for central corneal thickness. The 51.4% of children have increased IOP in the 0.01% atropine group, compared with 45.9% in the placebo group (P=0.511). CONCLUSION: The 0.01% atropine eye drops do not significantly affect the risk of elevated IOP. It is relatively safer to use in the studies that try to minimize myopia progression. However, a further long-duration study is required to be validated.

Importance: Myopia in school-aged children is a public health issue worldwide; consequently, effective interventions to prevent onset and progression are required. Objective: To investigate whether SMS text messages to parents increase light exposure and time outdoors in school-aged children and provide effective myopia control. Design, Setting, and Participants: This randomized clinical trial was conducted in China from May 2017 to May 2018, with participants observed for 3 years. Of 528 965 primary school-aged children from Anyang, 3113 were randomly selected. Of these, 268 grade 2 schoolchildren were selected and randomly assigned to SMS and control groups. Data were analyzed from June to December 2021. Interventions: Parents of children in the SMS group were sent text messages twice daily for 1 year to take their children outdoors. All children wore portable light meters to record light exposure on 3 randomly selected days (2 weekdays and 1 weekend day) before and after the intervention. Main Outcomes and Measures: The co-primary outcomes were change in axial length (axial elongation) and change in spherical equivalent refraction (myopic shift) from baseline as measured at the end of the intervention and 3 years later. A secondary outcome was myopia prevalence. Results: Of 268 grade 2 schoolchildren, 121 (45.1%) were girls, and the mean (SD) age was 8.4 (0.3) years. Compared with the control group, the SMS intervention group demonstrated greater light exposure and higher time outdoors during weekends, and the intervention had significant effect on axial elongation (coefficient, 0.09; 95% CI, 0.02-0.17; P = .01). Axial elongation was lower in the SMS group than in the control group during the intervention (0.27 mm [95% CI, 0.24-0.30] vs 0.31 mm [95% CI, 0.29-0.34]; P = .03) and at year 2 (0.39 mm [95% CI, 0.35-0.42] vs 0.46 mm [95% CI, 0.42-0.50]; P = .009) and year 3 (0.30 mm [95% CI, 0.27-0.33] vs 0.35 mm [95% CI, 0.33-0.37]; P = .005) after the intervention. Myopic shift was lower in the SMS group than in the control group at year 2 (-0.69 diopters [D] [95% CI, -0.78 to -0.60] vs -0.82 D [95% CI, -0.91 to -0.73]; P = .04) and year 3 (-0.47 D [95% CI, -0.54 to -0.39] vs -0.60 D [95% CI, -0.67 to -0.53]; P = .01) after the intervention, as was myopia prevalence (year 2: 38.3% [51 of 133] vs 51.1% [68 of 133]; year 3: 46.6% [62 of 133] vs 65.4% [87 of 133]). Conclusions and Relevance: In this randomized clinical trial, SMS text messages to parents resulted in lower axial elongation and myopia progression in schoolchildren over 3 years, possibly through increased outdoor time and light exposure, showing promise for reducing myopia prevalence. OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of chiropractic plus plum-blossom needling combined with flexibility training for attention deficit in mentally-retarded adolescents. METHODS: Thirty adolescents with mild mental retardation were randomly divided into a medical rehabilitation plus flexibility training group (10 cases, 2 cases dropped off), a flexibility training group (10 cases, 1 case dropped off) and a control group (10 cases). The patients in the flexibility training group received flexibility training, once every other day, 3 times a week for 12 weeks. The patients in the medical rehabilitation plus flexibility training group received chiropractic and plum-blossom needling at Baihui (GV 20) and Sishencong (EX-HN 1) on the basis of the treatment in the flexibility training group, once every other day, 3 times a week for 12 weeks. The patients in the control group did not receive any targeted physical training and medical rehabilitation. Tobii Pro Spectrum eye movement instrument was used to test the attention concentration (T), attention span (M), attention transfer (γ%) and attention distribution (η). RESULTS: Compared before treatment, T and M in the medical rehabilitation plus flexibility training group and the flexibility training group were increased after treatment (P<0.01, P<0.05), and γ% in the medical rehabilitation plus flexibility training group was increased after treatment (P<0.05). The increasing range of T, M and γ% in the medical rehabilitation plus flexibility training group and the flexibility training group was greater than that in the control group (P<0.01), and the increasing range of T and γ% in the medical rehabilitation plus flexibility training group was greater than that in the flexibility training group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The chiropractic plus plum blossom needling combined with flexibility training can improve the attention deficit in mentally-retarded adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Opaque bubble layer (OBL), which generates from photo-disruptive procedures on the cornea, has been a common phenomenon during femtosecond laser-assisted refractive surgeries and it would potentially impact eye tracking and flap lifting. And we have observed that an updated flap-making pattern could form less OBL clinically than the traditional pattern, which needed further approval. Thus, the purpose of this study is to prove our observation and investigate the possible risk factors related to the occurrence and type of OBL in laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) flaps using the Visumax laser system. METHODS: This prospective study included 167 eyes of 86 patients (mean age: 27.5 ± 6.1 years) undergoing bilateral femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) for myopia/myopic astigmatism by the same surgeon from April 2020 to August 2020. Preoperative data on refraction, central corneal thickness (CCT), and keratometry as well as intraoperative data were included for analysis. A new flap-making pattern creating an offset between flap-cut and side-cut was adopted to compare with the traditional pattern. The operation video of flap formation was analyzed to identify the existence and type of OBL. The area covered by OBL and the ratio of OBL to flap were calculated using Image J software. RESULTS: Among 167 eyes, 54 eyes (32.3%) developed OBLs, consisting of 31 as hard OBL coexisting with soft OBL, and 23 as soft OBL alone. The OBL incidence was significantly reduced in eyes with the new flap-making pattern compared with the traditional pattern (13.8% vs. 52.5%, P < 0.001). Hard OBLs had larger area ratios than soft OBLs (14.3 ± 8.3% vs. 1.1 ± 1.8%, P < 0.001). Univariate analyses revealed that eyes with more myopia, thicker CCT, and traditional flap-making patterns were more likely to develop OBLs. Multivariate analysis further confirmed that more myopia, thicker CCT, and traditional flap-making pattern were risk factors for OBLs. A Larger corneal diameter was associated with a higher incidence of hard OBL when applying the traditional flap-making process. CONCLUSION: More myopia, thicker CCT, and larger corneal diameter were risk factors for OBL development during flap creation, whereas a flap-making pattern with an offset between flap-cut and side-cut could reduce the incidence of OBL.

Myopia has become a major public health issue with an increasing prevalence. There are still individuals who experience similar environmental risk factors and, yet, remain non-myopic. Thus, there might be genetic factors protecting people from myopia. Considering the opposite ocular characteristics of primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) to myopia and possible common pathway between them, we propose that certain risk genes for PACG might act as a protective factor for myopia. In this study, 2,678 young adults were genotyped for 37 targeted single nucleotide polymorphisms. Compared with emmetropia, rs1401999 (allele C: OR=0.795, P=0.03; genotype in dominant model: OR=0.759, P=0.02) and rs1258267 (allele A: OR=0.824, P=0.03; genotype in dominant model: OR=0.603, P=0.01) were associated with low to moderate myopia and high myopia, respectively. Genotype under recessive model of rs11024102 was correlated with myopia (OR=1.456, P=0.01), low to moderate myopia (OR=1.443, P=0.02) and high myopia (OR=1.453, P=0.02). However, these associations did not survive Bonferroni correction. Moreover, rs1401999, rs1258267, and rs11024102 showed associations with certain ocular biometric parameters in different groups. Our study suggests that ABCC5, CHAT and PLEKHA7 might be associated with refractive errors by contributing to the regulation of ocular biometry, in terms of uncorrected results and their biological functions.

Purpose: To explore the relationship of color vision deficiency with myopia progression and axial elongation in Chinese primary school children during a five-year cohort study. Methods: A total of 2849 grade 1 students (aged 7.1 ± 0.4 years) from 11 primary schools were enrolled and followed up for five years. Cycloplegic autorefraction and axial length were measured annually. Color vision testing was performed using Ishihara's test and the City University color vision test. Results: The prevalence of color vision deficiency was 1.68%, with 2.81% in boys and 0.16% in girls. Color-deficient cases consisted of 91.6% deutan and 8.3% protan. Over the five years, the cumulative incidence of myopia was 35.4% (17/48) in the color-vision deficiency group, which was lower than the 56.7% (1017/1794) in the color normal group (P = 0.004). Over the five-year study period, the change in spherical equivalent refraction in the color vision-deficiency group (-1.81 D) was also significantly lower than that in the color normal group (-2.41 D) (P = 0.002). Conclusions: The lower incidence and slower progression of myopia in children with color-vision deficiency over the five-year follow-up period suggest that color-deficient individuals are less susceptible to myopia onset and development.

Purpose: To determine the annual incidences and rates of progression of myopia and high myopia in Chinese schoolchildren from grade 1 to grade 6 and explore the possible cause-specific risk factors for myopia. Methods: From 11 randomly selected primary schools in Anyang city, central China, 2835 grade 1 students were examined with annual follow ups for 5 years. Students were invited to undergo a comprehensive examination, including cycloplegic autorefraction, ocular biometry, and standardized questionnaires. Results: The mean spherical equivalent refraction decreased substantially from +0.94 ± 1.03 diopter (D) in grade 1 to -1.37 ± 2.08 D in grade 6, with rapid annual myopic shifts, especially for students in grades 3 through 6 (-0.51 to -0.59 D). The prevalence of myopia increased substantially, with the yearly incidence of myopia increasing from 7.8% in grade 1 and 2 to 25.3% in grades 5 and 6, and the incidence of high myopia increased from 0.1% to 1.0%. The 5-year incidence of myopia was lowest among children who has a baseline spherical equivalent refraction of greater than +2.00 D (4.4%), and increased to nearly 92.0% among children whose baseline spherical equivalent refraction was 0.00 to -0.50 D. The incidence of myopia was higher in children who had less hyperopic baseline refraction, two myopic parents, longer axial length, deeper anterior chamber, higher axial length-corneal radius of curvature ratio, and thinner lenses. Conclusions: Both the annual incidence and progression rates of myopia and high myopia were high in Chinese schoolchildren, especially after grade 3. Hyperopic refraction of children should be monitored before primary school as hyperopia reserve to prevent the onset of myopia and high myopia.

INTRODUCTION: To investigate the risk factors for myopia progression in primary school children and build prediction models by applying machine learning to longitudinal, cycloplegic autorefraction data. METHODS: A total of 2740 children from grade 1 to grade 6 were examined annually over a period of 5 years. Myopia progression was determined as change in cycloplegic autorefraction. Questionnaires were administered to gauge environmental factors. Each year, risk factors were evaluated and prediction models were built in a training group and then tested in an independent hold-out group using the random forest algorithm. RESULTS: Six variables appeared in prediction models on myopia progression for all 5 years, with combined weight of 77% and prediction accuracy over 80%. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) had the greatest weight (mean 28%, range 22-39%), followed by spherical equivalent (20%, 7-28%), axial length (13%, 10-14%), flat keratometry reading (K1) (7%, 4-11%), gender (6%, 2-9%), and parental myopia (3%, 1-10%). UDVA and spherical equivalent had peak weight at the second and third study years, respectively. The weight of myopic parents decreased steadily over the 5 years (9.5%, 1.9%, 1.8%, 1%, and 1.3%). Weekly time spent reading, reading distance, reading in bed, and frequency of eating meat were included as variables in different study years. CONCLUSIONS: Myopia progression in children was predicted well by machine learning models. UDVA and spherical equivalents were good predictive factors for myopia progression in children through primary school. Parental myopia was found to play a substantial role in the early stage of myopia progression but waned as children grew older.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to examine the association of an integrated model (composed of retinal arteriolar caliber, height, and sex) with blood pressure (BP) among a group of Chinese children, and assess the predictive value of the integrated model for childhood hypertension. METHODS: This study included 1460 candidates aged 12.634 ± 0.420 years. Height, weight, waist circumference, and BP were obtained and ophthalmological measurements were taken. The computer-imaging program (IVAN, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI) was used to measure calibers of retinal vessels. Receiver-operating characteristic curve (ROC) analyses were performed to assess the accuracy of the integrated model as a diagnostic test of elevated BP in children. RESULTS: The accuracy of the integrated model (assessed by area under the curve) for identifying elevated BP was 0.777 (95% confidence interval: 0.742-0.812). The optimal threshold of the integrated model for defining hypertension was 0.153, and the calculation formula for the specific predictive risk was: Logit (p/1 - p) = -5.666 - 0.261 × retinal arteriolar caliber + 0.945 × sex + 0.438 × height. In identifying elevated BP, the sensitivity and specificity were 0.711 and 0.736, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The model containing eye message is a comprehensive and relatively effective index to identify elevated BP in 12-year-old children, which can offer assistance to further understand childhood microcirculation disease. IMPACT: We firstly incorporated retinal vascular diameter, sex, and height into one integrated model to identify hypertension in 12-year-old children. The current discrimination of hypertension in children is difficult. There have been some studies to simplify the diagnosis of children's hypertension, but they were limited to anthropometric measurements. We proposed a composed model containing microcirculation information to predict childhood hypertension. Based on the knowledge that microcirculation is not only a means to study the manifestations but also early pathogenic correlates of hypertension, the combined model containing microcirculation message as a method may provide new insights into the diagnosis of childhood hypertension.
